Why – the challenge
A leading global manufacturer of innovative medical technology products needed 715 m² of cleanroom space with five separate cleanrooms, various airlocks and pass-throughs in a new building.
The cleanroom complex was to be set up on the second floor of a four-story new-build. It was to include two ISO Class 6 cleanrooms and three ISO Class 7 cleanrooms, a personnel airlock and nine material airlocks and pass-throughs for material transport within the cleanroom complex.
The cleanrooms are required for various process steps in the growth of crystals for semiconductors. Weiss Air Solutions planned the 4.5 million euro project in BIM and implemented it, ready for use, as general contractor.
How – the idea
Weiss Air Solutions was originally commissioned with the construction of the cleanrooms and the ventilation system. The contract was extended in the planning phase, making Weiss Air Solutions general contractor in charge of supervising the project. In addition to managing interfaces between the numerous trades, key priorities included meeting all project deadlines.
In order to optimally coordinate all trades and centrally bundle all information for subsequent building management, the project was initially fully planned using the BIM process. The construction site logistics were dynamic and demanding, since the work area was not yet released, various trades were operating simultaneously, and extensive bespoke solutions had to be realized.
What – the solution
715 m² cleanroom complex
The cleanroom complex comprises two ISO 6 and three ISO 7 cleanrooms and was implemented using tried-and-tested, modular system components. During the planning and construction of the personnel airlock, intelligent detailed solutions were developed to actively support cleanliness. An air shower was installed to remove particles from personnel as they move from the ISO 7 area into the ISO 6 area.
More than 40 filter fan units with H14 filters and around 50 individual extractors have been installed in the cleanrooms. The various cleanrooms are controlled and regulated using a Siemens S7 control system, which was easily integrated into the system technology.
In set-up, it was important to coordinate all rooms with each other in such a way that the pressure cascade prevents the infiltration of impurities. This was a challenge in view of the numerous technically-required feed-throughs in the cleanroom. For example, one machine was set into the wall of a cleanroom so that the technical area outside the cleanroom is in the gray area.
