MediClean

Perfect hygiene air-conditioning for your hospital

Ask the expert

Interview with Rupert Mack (Director Strategic Business Area MediClean)

How hygienic are our operating theatres?

For many years, we have been able to achieve a high standard of hygiene in hospitals and operating theatres in Germany and elsewhere in Western Europe. However, intensifying cost pressures, the shortage of skilled surgical staff and the increasing frequency of multidrug-resistant germs (MRSA) are now causing problems. Existing standards will therefore no longer be adequate in the future, and the risk of patients being exposed to infection during surgical operations will rise.

How important is the impact of airborne germs?

Airborne particles are a vital factor in relation to the hygienic safety in operating theatres. Their significance is easy to explain: The fewer particles in the air, the fewer germs can be deposited, the fewer infections they can cause. In other words, what has already been available for many years in, for example, the disinfection of surgical instruments must also be introduced for the air as well: continuous monitoring with consistent quality assurance.

What solutions do you offer for hospitals?

Our approach is obvious: We want to monitor the airborne particle load during operations and adjust the air supplied via the operating theatre ceiling if needed. In effect this means few particles: low air flows, more particles: stronger air flows. This is not only good for the patients, but also improves protection for surgical staff from surgical smoke. In addition, the adjustment of air flow to actual requirements reduces the noise load and cuts energy costs.

A secure supply of clean air from above

Vindur® Laminar Flow operating theatre canopies with low turbulence displacement flow

Operating theatre clean air canopies create a reliably particle-free protective area to isolate the wound area, the instrument tables and theatre personnel wearing sterile clothing from the surroundings. Due to the negative pressure created in the operating theatre, no air can enter from the outside. Vindur Laminar Flow systems are available with or without recirculation modules.

Control at any time

Vindur® CPM Continuous Particle Monitoring Real time monitoring of particles and surgical smoke

The quantity of particles and surgical smoke in the air can fluctuate significantly during an operation. The Continuous Particle Monitoring System is an innovative yet simple solution for staying in control. The system monitors the number of particles in the protected surgery area in real time, indicates the amount of contamination using a hygiene traffic light system and automatically adjusts the air flow in the air conditioning ceiling.

No chance for mould

Vindur® TOP hygienic air cooling unit with a thermal disinfection system

DIN 1946-4 and VDI 6022 have introduced new requirements for secondary air cooler units used in hospitals and areas which are generally occupied by people. Vindur TOP (with an optional thermal disinfection system) meets these requirements and provides a reliable and effective solution for preventing the growth of micro-organisms.
