Weiss Klimatechnik implements hygienic air conditioning for eye surgery in existing buildings

Why

  • Second surgery in practice
  • Construction in existing buildings
  • Complex exhaust air ducting

How

  • Turnkey solution
  • Involvement from the planning phase
  • Minimal solution based on DIN 1946-4

What

Why – the challenge

The Dr Franzen practice and eye clinic in Trier requires a second operating room for eye surgery. Cataract operations and the administration of medication into the eye (IVOM) in the case of macular diseases are to be performed here, for example. Weiss Klimatechnik has already equipped the first operating room with an air conditioning system for room class 1b and will be contracted again.

The clinic would like the same system concept as for the first operating room. Account must be taken of the low ceiling height in the existing building and the limited space in the operating room. The narrow, steep staircase complicates the transport of the equipment and construction materials into the practice.

The new operating room is located on the street side of the building, overlooking a pedestrian zone, so the exhaust air cannot be discharged directly to the outside.  Connection to the existing exhaust air system of the first operating room opposite requires precise planning and fast work in order to minimize downtime.

How – The idea

The hygienic air conditioning concept implemented successfully in the first operating room will be adjusted to the spacial conditions of the new operating room. Due to the limited space in the operating room, a minimal solution based on DIN 1946-4 will be devised. This does not correspond to the norm in all respects but is recommended from a hygiene point of view and is coordinated with hygienists and the Health Department in the preliminary project planning phase.

The thermal and hygienic air treatment is provided by a compact wall cabinet air conditioning unit and an external, air-cooled condenser/compressor unit. The air conditioning unit will be set up directly in the operating room.

The exhaust air is ducted away through the existing exhaust air system of the first operating room. To this end, the ceiling of both operating rooms is opened and an exhaust duct is laid from the new to the old operating room.

What – the solution

Vindur RoomIn WV 20.2

The room class 1b operating room is air-conditioned by a Vindur RoomIn WV 20.2 wall cabinet air mixing unit . Since the unit is only 40 cm deep, it can be installed in the operating room despite the limited space. The room height up to the slab ceiling is only 2.54 m. Therefore, instead of swirl diffusers in the ceiling, a stainless steel hygienic outlet is used. The system is designed for an air flow rate of 1,500 m3/h, with an outside air volume of 350 m3/h.

Vindur® RoomIn air conditioners filter the introduced heat-treated outdoor air in three steps (F7, F9 and H14 filters), thus achieving the desired low particulate value. Integrated silencers ensure a maximum sound level of under 48 dB(A) at the maximum volume flow rate. The icon-based intelli.4 control unit allows for intuitive operation.

Weiss Klimatechnik is responsible for the overall project management and coordinates the tradesman’s work. A specialist company has been commissioned with transporting the equipment through the narrow and steep staircase to the construction site.
