Dry rooms in battery production – the keystone of cell manufacture

The production of lithium-ion batteries is one of the most demanding manufacturing processes in industry – and the most critical factor in its success is invisible: moisture. Even the smallest amounts of water vapor in the production environment can decompose electrolytes, damage electrodes and irreversibly impair the safety and service life of each individual battery cell. This therefore makes dry rooms an absolute prerequisite for every quality-critical stage of battery production.

Battery cell production lines typically comprise several hundred to thousands of square meters of conditioned dry area – from electrode production and cell assembly to electrolyte filling. At the same time, dry rooms are among the most energy-intensive building technology systems of all: The dehumidification and air conditioning systems can account for a significant part of the total energy consumption of a battery factory – a decisive lever for operating costs and CO₂ balance.

A future-proof increase in energy efficiency is implemented through the continuous optimization of performance in the selection of standard and special components, for example. It’s usually a long way from the idea to the fully planned dry room. Even minor changes in the dew point or the number of people in the room can lead to time-consuming rescheduling and have a significant impact on the budget. With its new online configurator for dry rooms, Weiss Technik is now shortening and improving this planning process. The configurator is a practical tool for on-site consultation and enables a preliminary dry room design in real time.

Dry room systems are extremely energy-hungry. Our dry rooms are designed for maximum energy efficiency, noticeably improving the well-to-wheel balance of your manufacturing process and giving you a measurable advantage over conventional solutions from other suppliers. 
Targeted air conditioning – With the integration of process engineering measures for pre- and post-conditioning of supply air flows, our dehumidification system can be designed and implemented as a complete air conditioning unit. 
Cost-effective with series components – We also prioritize the use of series-produced functional components such as fans, heat exchangers and sensors in customized system construction. This allows you to economically plan costs and effort for project planning, service and maintenance.

Decades of experience in chamber construction since 1978

With over 40 years of experience in the construction of isolation cells and test chambers, we manufacture customized solutions in every shape and size that are optimally adapted to your needs and the specified conditions on site. Without exception, our large drive-in environmental simulation chambers all work with dehumidified outside air (dew point < -40°C). The customized concept allows almost any technically practical task to be mapped in interaction with the corresponding chamber construction.

Regulation, control and traceability

Reliable control in series – Depending on your requirements, our dehumidification systems are controlled autonomously in process management and monitoring by SIMPAC®, the digital measurement and control system. Process and sensor data is transmitted to higher-level controllers or control centers via a data bus. DAQ also allows us to track when and where each individual cell was manufactured. For even easier integration into existing customer systems, process control and monitoring can also be controlled and managed by a Siemens Simatic system on request.
